Well David, romping is a starting issue related to the GP system. And yes, weaker batteries can lead to this situation. Mine started to romp a little before replacing the batts so I suspect the batts can start the truck but not really energize the GPs as much as they need. My dead giveaway was slower cranking speed followed by a load test that confirmed weak batts.
Tenn, its not a romp though- at least not the way it would romp with the different oil i used. Sounds like it doesnt fire off evenly, but clears up right away. It doesnt matter if the engine is cold or hot and it doesnt do it all the time either. It first started doing it after I got the PCM back from Jody. Its only done it a few times.
The batteries and alternator are about 5 months old. I only get a slow start when it is completely cooled down. I will have to ohm out the GPs cuz cycling them 2-3 times make a huge difference too. When it stops raining I will look into it some more and post what I find.
Oh, well then I would not suspect the usual culprits. Too bad you cannot start in the stock tune like a flip chip. I always do that in the winter time. I believe Jody himself posted something to that effect a short while ago right here or at least someone who had just gotten off the phone with him. Anyway, it was posted here on FTE.
