Factory 3 speed OD driving question.

I tried to use the search function, but fot over 500 matches and none of the top 3 pages really covered it, so I apoligize if I'm re-hashing a tired subject!

Is it bad to keep Overdrive on all of the time? Like around town driving and such?

You can do it... I've done it. I would caution you to KNOW the characteristics of your OD before you ever try it in stop-and-go traffic. The LAST thing you want to have happen is to take your foot off the gas and have it 'go over' when you really want to stop quickly.

Sounds like you're describing an auto tranny?? If so, it doesn't hurt unless you're in an area with hills and you ride the brakes to overcome the 'free-wheeling' effect. This leads to overheated damage to brakes/drums/rotors etc.

Use 3rd or whatever gear is 1:1 on hills. Manual tranny advice is pretty much the same.

MT, he means a B-W OD, trucks could be had with them after '52. They freewheel when the lever is pushed in and you let up on the gas, until you get up to speed and let off on the gas, then they engage OD (hence Nuthin's comment). No engine braking.

No, it sure doesn't hurt them. In fact in my limited experience it really cushions the drivetrain, if you are as sloppy a shifter as I am (not that anyone is really smooth with three on the tree)
