Early '99 Clutch and Flywheel
I've got an early '99. the clutch is making a noise that sounds kind of like marbles rolling around. It mainly does it when it's loaded or when I'm taking off on a hill. What is this sound? pilot bearing? throwout bearing? Also, does this truck have the single or dual mass flywheel? I've heard that ford quit using the dual mass for a few years or something. I know the Dual mass ones can't be resurfaced, but can the single mass ones? Thanks

All the 99-03's are supposed to have single mass flywheels, but there have been one or two posting of people having a DMF in the early 99's. The sound you describe might be that of a DMF, but I fear that it's the mainshaft rattling in the pilot, or a spring coming loose from the clutch disc. Either way I wouldn't leave it too long. The SMF can be resurfaced.

Don't let it go long before you get a new clutch. I recommend a LUK since that is what I have been running for over 100,000 miles. The LUK is a 13" clutch vs the stock 12" and comes with a new flywheel to do that. Whatever you end up putting in, get a Kevlar pilot bushing to replace the junk factory roller pilot bearing.
