Okay guys I have heard a lot of mixed reviews on wether or not to put upgrades in the V10. So, the question is does it help any to make modifications? I know it's everyones personnal preference of course to do what they wish, but generally speaking is there any mod that will actually enhance performance and help on mpg which is something a lot of us V10 owners beat a dead horse about? So, how about some advice from some of you V10 guroos on what to do.
I myself have a 03 250 CC sb with a topper, bone stock with 285's. I tow occasionally, otherwise it's my daily driver. I average 10 to 11 mpg. For what I use it for is there something I can do to help the mpg and possibly the performance as well? Or do I shut-up and color? Thanks in advance.
Performance, there is some gain in the Y-pipe mod, and some feel that opening the intake helps too.
Even though dyno runs are the way to "prove" if mods work, a dyno doesn't measure all the different things that occur in all the different gears, throttle position, tranny shifting, etc. etc.
Seat-of-the-pants can tell a different story than the wide-open-throttle torque curve that comes out of the dyno.
OK, I've said enough... that'll stir up some controversy
On most exhaust systems there is a place where the two sides of the exhaust headers come together to flow into one pipe to the rear... on a 99 to 04 it is really a "T" pipe two into one "collector"... the reference above for a "Y" pipe mod is to get rid of the "T" and put in line a better flowing "Y" pipe

look at this.........stirring up dirt huh !
"most" will probably agree that a S/C is the best bang-for-the-buck! but if you ain't got 4K+ to drop or it don't seem justified, then that woun't be on the top of your list.
EXHAUST
-HEADERS( not the cheezy $150 ebay ones either)
-high flow Y pipe (custom made or included w/ headers)
-Aftermarket high flow CAT (here comes the controversy haha)
-good baffle style muffler (flowmaster style), i think CAP stated that was the best bet for the V10's. i currently have a FM original 40 series, LOVE IT!!GEARS - a gear change will improve pep also (calculate for tire size and usage, 22-2400rpm's is the "SWEET SPOT") TUNERS -SCT makes a 5 bank/4position performance chip that V10 guys have tried, and liked more then the "plug-n-play" models (don't have one so i don't know actual performance gains from this mod). INTAKE (here comes MORE contoversy) -good filter (i use K&N good quality and reusable, i clean it every oil change)
-Cold Air system. or at least alittle more flow than the stock "straw" tube before the filter. *side note: has any one ever tried running a race and breathing threw a burger king drink straw the entire time? that's kinda what the stock housing is like......
-TB spacer...........probably not, woun't see to much from that one (more controversy there too, hahaha)
-Larger TB: not sure on this one but it's out there, ACCUFAB makes a single blade design for "improved throttle responce, and mid-top end power increases" as said on there web site. i might try one one day if i can get one cheap on e-bay.
whew that was a long one........well it out there let the controversy begin hahahaha!
If you are addicted to speed and would like to beat some Lightnings and Harleys on the street plus go to the dragstrip, look at my gallery. I still average 14.4 mpg after installing the bed cover. If you are also into makin your V-10 look different than any other and win at a few truck shows, check out what I did to my truck Silver Son!!
Not trying to be a smart a$$ here, but if you were looking for decent gas mileage you shouldn't have bought a V10. My mileage sucks but the additional power the supercharger adds makes up for it.
Someone else wrote in a another thread about mods, money and mpg, and made the best suggestion in the world - take what you would spend on mods and by an old Honda/Toyota or something and drive it daily - you'll get more return on your dollar than trying to squeeze 2-5 mpg out of the V10.
With that said, I did find one FREE mod that gave me about .5 more mpg - I did the ZooDad mod. Took me all of 15 minutes (most of that was going from the driveway to the tool shed).
When my current paper air filter needs to be changed, I'll go with a K&N - I know some here don't care for them, but I've had them in the last 3 trucks that I owened (Ranger x2 & F150) and never had a single problem. As far as weather or not the improve mpg???? in my F150, it had a paper in it when I bought it with 87k, at that time I was getting 15mpg daily. At 95k, I put in the K&N and got about .8 mpg increase. Worth it? I think so, in the long run.

Why would you do this? Any oiled cotton and gauze filter is designed to provide added filtration once it gets some dirt embedded into it. You will have to clean it when you get 50,000 miles on it, but if you clean it every 5,000 miles you are actually causing the filter to allow more dirt through.
Has anyone that's done this mod had any issues with water getting into the filter? Is window screen ok to use over the hole that you cut to keep bugs and other large debris out?

Gotta agree with this. I don't clean mine unless they are packed with dirt.
Thanks for the constructive criticism guys. I have heard about the Y pipe mod, I just may do that. Does that zoodad mod really work? Hey MarkMoore have you had any issues since you made that modification? Thanks for offering your kid's crayons Monsta but I will use my own kids.
