Have many people had to replace the variable cam timing idler? This is a 5.4
04 with 23,000 miles. The timing chain is slaping the housing on cold start.
I am thankful it is under warranty. Hank Farmer
Hi Hank. Welcome to FTE. I dont recall ever hearing about one replaced in a thread I have read. Might just be a fluke. Hopefully it will be changed out, and you will be rolling again quite soon.
Hank: Mine is an 04 with about 23K also no problems like that mine is a gutless wonder have had 3 dealers look at it and check for a reflash all say it has the latest programming think it is just a heavy pig am going to try a GM next time with the vortec haven't had a gm product since 1969, also the AC wouldn't cool a breadbox which they say is also withing ford specs??
even with the idler broken it would be almost impossible for it to hit the cover. you are describing a known problem which has to do with the oil filter. which oil filter are you using. It must be a oil filter with a silicone ADBV if not after shutdown the oil returns to the pan and the galleries are dry and you are dry starting the engine each time. the noise is from no oil pressure going to the top end and causing premature wear.
All service work has been performed by the ford dealership. They did install
a different oil filter on my first complaint. Now they say they will ivestigate
for idler failure saying they have had some problems with other 2004 models.
Thanks for your response.
