I am the secound owner of a 64 SB. custom cab.
81,000 org. miles runs and looks great.$1900.
I plan on keeping it original with the help of you guys and
Vintage Ford in Sacramento Ca.
I have been told by a few old timers the 292 has become a clasic
motor, very costly to rebuild. $1200. for the kit less crank.
This would make it a $2500. motor.
now some of you will say put a 302 and auto in it for the same money. Maybe but I want to keep my 292 and 4 speed.
Has anyone rebuilt a 292?
At one point, I was thinking about swapping out my 292/4spd. in my '64 F-250. Until I actually drove it. I love it! Especially how the exhaust sounds...As for the rebuild kit, try [link:www.kanter.com|Kanter Auto Products]. They have a pretty complete overhaul kit for $680. Soon, I'll be getting this for myself.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, stirs the soul, saying I'm a bad **** like lettin'em rip with a window shaking, fuel gulpin, carbon monoxide belchin, attention gettin, V-oh my LORD!-8!
Pete if you are a purest and want to keep your truck original then keep the 292 engine in it. Great motor and a lot of basic parts still available for it. I am not sure about the classic part though. I haven't heard that it is a sought after power plant. On the other hand the 5.0/302 is a new power plant and has a lot more options available. If I was gonna change it out the 390 would be my engine of choice.
Have a great time with your new toy either way.

In the still cool hours of the night, you can hear chevys rusting away.
From my experience(which isn't very long) I too would keep the 292. My dad owns a mechanis shop and around there the 302 isn't that popularr. My dad had a 64 with a 292 and 4 speed. My older brother says it's the best old truck we ever had. It had dual exhaust with glasspacks. Man that was a truck. So I would keep the maoter and trans also.
