Curb weight of 65 F-100

I am looking at a short wheelbase, with a 390 & a c-6 trans. I am currently looking at two options of getting this truck home (hauling it over 1200 miles.)

Option 1: Tow dolly, 72 inch maximum outside to outside tire width (already found out from owner it's 74 inches).

Option 2: Auto transport. Can have 75 inch maximum outside to outside width.


The following is drectly from Uhaul's website.

Weight ratio: The Auto Transport weighs 2100 lbs. The combined weight of the Auto Transport and the vehicle being towed may exceed the tow vehicle's curb weight by 25%. For example, a 4000-lb. tow vehicle may tow an Auto Transport and vehicle being towed with a combined weight of up to 5000 lbs.



I will be towing this truck with an 88 model F-150, 302 EFI, 5 Speed, with 3.08 gears.


Any help is greatly appreciated. And I do mean greatly!

Kyle, if you go with 1 and stay in the speed limits, I wouldn't worry about it. #2 you will need 10,000 lbs tags on your truck if you get stopped by the dot.

I would drive the truck if I were gonna buy it, points, starters, fuel pumps, etc. is about all to go wrong with that setup.

Curb weight of 65 F-100

When I picked up my 74/F250 Camper Spcl/Long Bed I used a Auto transpot from U-Haul, It just squeezed on but had to let a lot of air out of the 7.50X16 tires to get the straps over and turns on the lock device (didnt figure in that part) For the extra expense of the transport I felt it was well worth it. The transport has brakes and didnt have to worry with anything from the truck on the ground.

We pulled the transport with a 96 1/2 ton 4X4 C*&%y 350/4spd seemed a little heavy but went down the road fine.

Curb weight of 65 F-100

Why tow it? I just picked mine up in Tennesee a few months ago and drove it 1720 miles home in 3 days. To get mine registered in California I had to have it weighed. My '66 351C/c6 shortbed weighs in 3750 lbs.

And plus I have already looked at the weather forcest for the weekend of Jan 18th, and it is supposed to be a spectacular weekend.

And I want to find out what kind of highway mileage my 88 F-150 gets! For the past 4 years of it's life it has always seen city driving. Although I only live 20 miles from work, it is 55-60 most of the way there. Plus theres alot of stop & go traffic too. I just want to get it out on the interstate and let the old girl breathe.

I really appreciate all of your help. Thanks guys! And hopefully there will be a Slick 60 parked in my driveway by the end of January!

Kyle. Sounds like you finally found a truck. Congratulation. I would guess the gvw of one of our trucks to be in the neighborhood of 4000-4800 pounds. If you are going to tow it, take one of those cheapo floor jacks with you, jack up the truck and take off the front wheels, back the hauler in underneath, put a couple of pieces of used carpet down in the tire slot on the hauler and lower the brake drums down into the slots and tie them down. Now you are legal for the dolly, and you have two spares for the rear on your way home as well as a jack to help you change them. That does not suck.
