how do you shift a ratchet shifter?
I am buying a ranger with a v8 and an automatic transmission. I would like to know how to idintify the trans with out driving it. It either has an aod or a c4. Also it has a ratchet shifter and i want to know how to shift the darn thing. Nobody has said how to get them into park or reverse all i hear is how to shift them threw the foward gears. I don't really understand how to do that.

This is how mine was...
Just push the shifter forward or pull it back dependeing on what you need to do, then move it back to the "center" position. Repeat the motion to "click" the transmission another gear in that direction.
ex - from park, pull back and return to center to get to reverse. Then pull back and return to center again for nuetral. Then pull back and return to center for ?
I say "?" because there are several types of valve bodies available. Some will put you in regular drive, while other will put you in the top gear or lowest gear. Mine was a full manual reverse pattern valve body and I loved it.
