EBP solenoid oil leak

EBP solenoid oil leak

<HR style="COLOR: #666666" SIZE=1>1995 7.3 power stroke has oil leak from, far as I can see coming from, base of Ebp solenoid. I can't find a diagram or infomation on this problem and not sure how much force can be used to tighten nut on top. I am living in New Zealand and any parts I need I have to get from U.S.A. which takes some time so any suggestions on how I can fix this myself are greatfully received.

thank you
Phil Atlas

Welcome to FTE Phil Atlas.
The o-rings sealing the base of the turbo pedastal are the usual culprits in this matter.
You have to remove the turbo and pedastal to replace them.
The turbo is separate from the pedastal, but they are held down together with the bolts.
It wouldn't hurt to buy a new pedastal and o-rings and do it all at once. Sometimes the exhaust back pressure valve actuator starts to leak out through the control rod.

Also here is International engine's web site that has a good online manual for the 7.3l turbodiesel.

Thanks for reply. I do have work shop manuals but they don't have any thing on this oil leaking from around the exhaust pressure regulator ( solenoid ) which is next to the exhaust back pressure actuator.

Just did the same job

Just did this same job on a customers. The oil is most likely coming from the EBPV, thru the rod on the side. You'll need to get a new pedastal assembly, from int or ford. I ended up buying a whole turbo with the pedastal, all new. Just make sure you get the o-rings seated in the block before setting on the trubo. Mine came out the first try. The hardest part is the two rear bolts holding down the pedastal. You'll need a 1/4" drive ratchet, a 6" extension, a 2" extension and a 10mm woble socket. And you can pull the turbo off with out having to loosen the Y pipe. Just take the four bolts on the turbo flange and leave the y pipe in there. You'll need to sets of o rings if you are changing the pedastal. One set for the block and one set for the turbo side.

Thanks. I finally fixed oil leak by replacing all 3 'o' rings on EBP solenoid. I had to do it twice as 1st time I pushed the solenoid mount too far and when tightening nut on top it pulls mount back up and because it had gone past oil delivery and return holes the 'o' rings got cut. It is important to insert mount only 2 or 3 ml past where it will end up when you gently tighten nut on top which pulls mount back towards solenoid squashing top 'o' ring to make firm seal with pedestal in mounting hole - this is the main way the solenoid is retained in pedestal assisted only by the two lower 'o' rings. The lower 'o' ring is smaller than the top two. I used Viton 'o' rings. Make sure that where the two wires exit solenoid are pointed in correct way between turbo and EBP actuator as I broke mine but was able to repair with 2 pot adhesive and it still works - lucky me. Took the opportunity to gut the cat and re routed crankcase vent to 45 degree insert in exhaust just infront of rear axle - I made a plug that can't go all the way through to seal hole in air intake where vent originally went. I also re programmed to Edge 'race' and when I can afford it wish to purchase 4" or 5" exhaust - any suggestions as to which size or brand and price would be appreciated.
