What do you think could be wrong here. My 3.8 Windstar when ever I turn the steering wheel the rpm's surge around 4-500 rev's, makes the van hard to control when parking or in a stop and go situation. All else seems good and no check engine light.
Thanks Brian, I did check that power steering fluid it only seems a tad low and very brown and murky, tomarrow I will change the fluid and see if that changes anything.
That would be a good first step.
The 4.2 uses a front end mounted power steering fluid cooler, but I am not sure about the 3.8.
If it does, change all the fluid in the resevoir, drive it a while then repeat, repeat a few more times and you should have fresh fluid.
Another way would be break the line and let it pump the fluid out while adding new fluid until the fluid out of the line runs clean.
Bummer I flushed the steering resavoir and it still surged so I replaced the power steering pump and still I have the surge ...... The local repair shop will soak me big time if I bring it in to them... I am clueless on whats wrong here ,,,,,,, any thought would be appreciated.
As soon as the steering wheel is turn any amount the engine surges up ti 1800 rpm's then it will slowly back down. I have been reading the manuel and think possibly it could be the IAC (INTAKE AIR CONTROL) , its a 100 dollar part so I have my fingers crossed, but nothing else comes to mind. I did check for vaccum leaks with starter fluid along with a visual check of vac lines and all seems a ok......

Don't buy IAC valve. For one, when it sticks the car won't idle.....at all, and for two, 99% of the time when they do get sticky it's a simple matter of removing the valve and freeing it up with a shot of carb cleaner and cycling the valve by hand to get it working again.
I really have no idea what could be making it surge like that. What kind of shape is the battery in? The old lady's van does some funny stuff when the battery gets tired.
