I have a chance to trade for a 3X2's setup. The owner says it never worked correctly and was a pain in the butt to keep running right. Now the questions...could I block off the end carbs and just run on the center carb? Could I keep my Duraspark dizzy if I went to the small cap? Thanks...
Yes you can. On a 3x2 setup, the engine runs on the center carb. The others only come into play under WOT. Normally they operate under vacuum. Just like vacuum secondaries on a 4bbl. Over the years, or through lack of knowledge, some people try to make them to operate mechanically. This never works well on the street. You will need to do your homework but when setup correctly you are going to enjoy driving with them. good luck.

There is no vacuum, mechanical linkage only, and it looks like original stuff. This guy thought the engine idled off all three carbs.
I had a set of the gm variety on my old 57. The center carb is the primary feeder, the front and rear only growled when you mechanically asked them to.
It's been forever since I've seen a Ford tripower carb, but I'm thinking they all have idle circuits. I know the GM type(and Mopar) were vacuum operated and were not functioning until you had WOT. The Ford type were mechanical linkage, like the quad set up. I think it has three std 2bbl's on it.
They aren't much worse then quads to get running.....maybe just a hair LOL!!!
In all essence you could run it on just the center carb. Close the blades on the outers, shut off the idle bleed screws and go. Might have to richen the center carb on idle, but should run.
I think with some fine tuning, and adjusting ALL three carbs identically you can get it running smooth. That's the trick.
Good luck with it.
I've got three vehicles with quads and I don't consider them a pain at all. I never touch any of them for the most part.
I ran the Ford 3X2 set up on several engines. If someone claims they had trouble with it they didn;t know what to adjust and how. I ran the same set up (manifold, Holley carbs, mechanical linkage, fuel block and the bitchin' look stock air cleaner) on a 390 and 2 different 428's. Adjusted the idle mixture screws only (there are mixture screws on all three carbs and they have to be adjusted right. The 428CJ motor even passed Oregon emissions with the 3X2's on it and no air pump. The one thing I did do was add a spring to the front carb so I could tell when the other 2 carbs when being tipped in. The center carb is at about 1/2 throtle when the front carb tips in and the rear carb tips in when the front carb is about 1/4 throttle. All 3 carbs reach Wide Open Throttle at the same time. Not onlya shape looking set up but a nice preformance enhancer. The 428CJ picked up a 3/10 of second in ET when changing from the stock 735CFM to the 3X2's. If you don't want it I do.
I ran a repop 3x2 setup on a 331 stroker small block for well over a year with no problems. Never had to touch them once. The center is the primary, the other two came in simultaneously together at about 1/2 throttle. You can idle it off the center carb or all three. Just might need to tune the jets to match the application.
