Rob, Yes it is true. The '64 F-250 2WD, and 4WD pickups had different wheelbases. The 4WD wb. was shorter than the 2wd. This is why they used the '57-'60 box on all the 4x4's up until 1966. In 1966 the F-250 4x4 wb remained the same, thus having a '57-'60 box on them. The F-100 4x4 was available in either a '66 or 57-60 styleside box because you had a choice of 2 different wb's.

To take this question a step further, I have a 66 250 4x4 with the 57 to 60 box. Will an 8' styleside box from a 4x2 fit? I'm beggining a complete resto and would not mind losing that box.
Im looking at buying a 63 long bed fleetside this weekend..
looks all original underneath with the riveted shackle and hanger
mounts too. I can post some pics if someone wants to let
me know what they think.
