I was starting to head out today, stop and filled up and 2 miles later my truck started spurting and I had to tow her back home. I can prime the carb and get her to run but when I shift into 2nd it just wants to die. I get lots of gray smoke shooting out the back. I cleared out the fuel pump filter and replaced it with a new paper one but it still doesn't work. I cleared out lots of brown "sand" from the filter which I presume is rust from the tank. Where do I go from here? Take out the tank and clean it? How do I flush all the lines? Vapor lock? Please help...THANKS!
I'll try to help on this. Our 61-66 trucks have simple fuel systems. The tank is only held in by some bolts behind the seat. Look under your truck at the drivers side of tank area, you will see where the fuel line attaches to the tank. Drain it here, proper disposal of gas and all that,of course. The filler neck is easily removed, sending unit also. Get some tank flush from the auto parts store and follow the directions. The lines just unbolt from the pump and carb, use a "tubing wrench" to take 'em off. Now would be a good time to get some new, clean lines and bend them like the originals. It wouldn't hurt to unbolt the fuel pump for a visual inspection. Everything is a easy job in regards to this. When done, be sure to tighten everything and double check for leaks afterwards..
I suspect a buidup of that "sand" in your carb not letting the needle seal at the seat (BTDT). you may need a carb rebuild. Flush the tank as suggested so this doesnt happen again. When you filled the tank it sturred up all that sediment, then starting the engine just sucked it right in.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!! I got some very bad gas. I took the tank out and drained it. I noticed a little surface rust on the mounts so I fix that while I had it out. I replaced the 5/16" rubber lines, fuel filters (had some red "sand", rust I guess in the fuel pump filter), change the sparkplugs (fouled and old), put some fuel system cleaner in it, prime it and she ran great. I will be more careful where I get my gas. I bought the truck a couple months ago and before that it sat for 1 1/2 years. This fuel system cleaning was very overdue.
