Recently bought a '63 f100. Originally had a 292. Somewhere along the line it became a 223. It still has the original rear end and 3 speed. Problem is, when I'm on the highway, it sounds like I'm doing 90 at 60mph. Can this be fixed by changing rear gears or do I need to go to a 4 speed? If changing the rear will work what is a good ratio? Guys, I'm a newbie and am finding just how little I know. Have already run into serious brake problems posted elsewhere and muddled thru them, but this I fear is beyond my kn owledge.
Those 223's can make a noise can't they? Any engine that is running above it's power curve sounds about the same though. It's the rearend gear ratio. I guess my question is what do you want the truck to do? If you want pulling power you have it. If you want freeway speed go lower.
The rearend should have a tag attached to one of the bolts that will tell you the current ratio. Up equals more pulling less highway speed. Down the reverse.
Kelly, for someone that don't know nothing, (your claim) you sure are dragging up a lot of old bone yard posts. There is enough new problems to solve that we don't need to drag up dead wood.

I'm surprised you didn't get after Jim for his up and down ratio error? Or, at least the way I understood it, it appeared to be incorrect.

While motoring thru the questions I've often noticed you old hands have to obtain more info to answer. I merely was trying to avoid that necessity with the old bone yard posts? you speak of. It also was my understanding that rear gears can be different from the the factory depending on motor or tranny.
