My 1989 F250 plow truck is trying to get ready for plow season.
I performed a tune up today, and the truck is running great.
Over the summer, apparently the dipstick tube rusted away, it has come loose from the engine block.
Does anyone know what is involved in replacing this? It is leaking oil from the tube, it runs onto the exhaust manifold and makes a great mess and lots of smoke.
mine slides in and out as p.o. put headers on and just left it but mine dont leak much......appears that it just bolts to the manifold ........so maybe pull bolt see if it will slide out,,,,i can pull tube right out puting in hole if u can get to it .....just findin hole!!!!!!
On my 88 the tube has an o-ring on the end that goes into block and a bracket on the upper end of the tube that is held on with one of the bolts that holds the tranny to the engine. When installing lubricate and replace the o-ring with a new one . It helps to have one person on the top of the engine feeding it down to another person underneath to guide the tube into the block so you don't damage the o-ring.
A new o-ring is real important in the dipstick tube replacement. The old o- ring that is sitting for years gets hard and loses its elasticity. Once disturbed and reinstalled it will generally leak. I have used the old one and it has leaked on me. I hate doing a job twice for a .50 cent part.

I was hoping that the dipstick from Ford would include this o-ring, any idea?
You never know. It has been my experience that everything is an extra part. Last time I got stuck I matched an o-ring from the plumbing section at Ace Hardware and it worked without any leaks.
