LAST EDITED ON 01-Sep-01 AT 10:56 AM (EST)[p]Okay, I am still guilty of magazine reading. But the 23rd F-100 Supernationals sure looks like one heck of a show. Has anyone been to this in recent years? Just how many of our years of Ford pickups are represented? From some of the photos, there seems to be many many fat fender years; not that I don't appreciate them but there are soooo many of them out there. And now they are reproducing the cabs in fiberglass!
I went to an all Ford show last weekend - it was very small. Pickups? Two, both of the fat fender years with a pickup and a panel truck.

Lee There are well over 800 Ford trucks there and it is still for the most part a Fat fender truck show, pretty much like Run to the Rock at Lake Lure NC in two weeks, that several of the NC FTEers are planning to show up for.

As far as I know it still is the largest gathering of Ford trucks at one time, in the same place.

FTE and a bunch of its members show up every year. This year, the count was close to 70 FTE'rs showed up. LOTS of trucks other than the 48-56's are there and their numbers grow every year. The magazines usually fail to mention that. This year 65-66 made a really big showing. It looks like 61-66 is the next big thing, with 67-72 a close second.

Ken, It looks to me like the fat fender fad has peeked, the 61-66 it filling it's shoes, but the next rage is the uni.

your thoughts,

Based on the numbers at the show, and the huge numbers of 65-66 shop manuals we see in comparison to 61-65 I'd say that of the 61-66 group, the 65-66 are the most popular.

66 is definitely the darling of the bunch in manual sales just like the 56 is. The grill, which was design with the center in honor of the 10th anniversary of the 56, seems to be the biggest reason.

Its true that the 48-56 have peaked. We sell far more 61-79 than 48-56. Granted, my numbers may not reflect industry-wide trends.

The next version of DCForum, in beta now, includes polls in the posts. We'll put up a poll as soon as the version is released.

I think one of the big reasons for the 65-66 run is the I-beams and the ability to upgrade to power steering and brakes. The unis are coming from zero, do you sell books for them. I never recall seing a uni until I was grown. In the last two years they seem to come out of the woodwork.

I have been involved with my favorite the 66 since 67 and still have the engine and chassis from that truck.

I like taking my 66 to local car shows and being the only 61-66 here. Once in awhile, I see some custom 61-66, but they are extremly few and far between. Never did care much for the fat fendered type, but to each their own! Feel sorry for the 57-60 bunch, they seem to have been forgotten..!!

Lee, you should really try to make Pigeon Forge if you can. The town is full of Ford trucks and other classic cars and trucks as well. Lots of cars and trucks for sale in parking lots etc. Most of them priced high but still fun to look at. There are more 65-66's each year. I have been going since the mid 80's when it was in Gatlinburg and there were only 80 trucks or so and they were almost all 53-56's. I'm guessing there are about 40-50 65-66's in the show now and more each year. It's a real good time. I agree with Ken and John on the 65-66 thing. Updating these trucks with power steering and disc brakes is easy and makes the drvability so much nicer. I actually have a 66 grill and fender emblems on my '65. I love the looks of a 66. As for the unibodies, I think many folks see them as "rare" or unique and that is making them more in demand. I always thought they were a little akward looking and rough riding. IMHO

Well Mike, I finally found Pigeon Forge by using MapQuest (couldn't find it in the road atlas) and discovered it is 1850 miles away. So it will go on that long list of things to do and see in a few years, like after retirement. That will be a drive but most likely worthwhile. It is always nice to fly such distances but then you find parts you can really use but there is no way to take them back with you. That is what happened to me when I went to the first all-Ford event at Carisle; I really could have used that intake, console, bumper,,,,.
