Carburator adjustment

LAST EDITED ON 03-Nov-01 AT 09:37 AM (EST)[p]Hello,
Any guidance on carburator adjustments? I've got a 63 F100 with a 68-72 - 390, 2 barrel, that seems to be running rich, and somewhat sluggish... I'm no mechanic...BUT, I successfully adjusted the carb on my tractor...Didn't want to just 'play with' the settings on my truck though.
Also, should I be putting higher octane gas in this beast?
Thanks in advance!
Green

Carburator adjustment

Go ahead and take the carb off and turn it over, carefully draining the fuel somewhere. You should see a plate with four screws in it under the carb. Take this off and unscrew the power valve out and go get a new one. That one is probably leaking and will cause it to run rich. If you feel brave, you could take the carb top off and clean out the fuel bowel while your at it, especially if there is alot of gook on the tip of the power valve.

Assuming the rest of the carb is in proper working order(power valve, accelerator pump, float adjustment, clean filter, etc, etc) You can adjust the carb as follows:
1. Run engine to warm it up. Choke fully open.
2. Connect a tachometer.
3. Reduce your idle to about 500 rpm in neutral.
4. Adjust idle mixture to achieve highest RMP possible, then back out 1/4 turn. Reduce idle back
to 500 RPM in neutral.
5. Repeat for other side if applicable.
6. Re-adjust set screw to factory specs.

This works pretty good for most carbs. After setting idle speed, you may want to adjust your choke setting but this is easier if you do it on cold mornings. Tweaking this a little at a time will net you better results than setting by a manual. If you play with the choke a little bit you'll see how simple it is.

Carburator adjustment

I got extremely lucky when i rebuilt my carb.....the standard setting turned out to be perfect....if you are looking for a starting point for the carb the general rule i have always heard and used is all the way in....out one and a half turns....never know, you might get lucky like i did, also make sure to set the timing at the same time(might as well)...my carb was in desperate need of a rebuild and it was running so lean the guy before me retarded the time because he was retarded(i think)
