Lift Pump, How To Check?

Lift Pump, How To Check?
I am working my way through possible things that keep my '99 from running.
one injector has been replaced, CPS has been replaced, will start on either but dies after thirty seconds. How do I test the pressure on the lift pump? I know it is working because it will pump through the filter with the top off, but is it enough? thanks, Jerry

the lift pump is the actual high pressure pump, mounted on the framerail under your seat.
a powerstroke will idle with about 20psi of pressure, so to check it, you can install a gauge in the port at the front of the passenger side fuel rail, (permanent) or you can hook a gauge to the rear of the fuel bowl (permanent or temporary) with a special fitting. do some searching and you should find what you need.

I recommend a temporary check at the fitting on the head on the front. That is the only way to insure there is pressure in the rails, or at leat that rail. (There are a couple of problems that could occur after the fuel leaves the filter bowl before getting into the rails). Have you checked for any codes. Is your hpop full of oil. Is there a fresh fuel filter, and when was engine oil last changed?

Engine oil has 3k miles on it. the fuel filter is two weeks old. the codes first showed an imbalance on #5, then showed wrong axle ratio, and after I changed the CPS it showed a bad CPS code and that one is still in it. I put in the black CPS. I don't know how to check the oil in the hpop, there is an allen plug there but I haven't pulled it. Also I haven't checked the basic fuses. It is raining here on and off and I have to wait for a clear spot to check something. I am learning more as I go. I am 66 and handicapped so I have to get help with some things. thanks for your help.

Well, if you have mounted a hose to your filter bowl drain tube, (like a lot of us have) you could simply turn the key on and open the drain valve to observe for a strong flow of fuel out of that into a container. From there you can move on and not waste your time gauging the pressure at the bowl.
As for the hpop oil, I need to check something and get back to you. No info is better than bad info. I believe the allen head plug is the spot but have not had to check mine. Someone chime in here or I will have to search, hard.

The CPS you put in was it factory ford part? had a shop "fix my truck in a pinch and they used an aftermarket CPS (Unknown to me). It was causing P0344 (intermittant CPS), P0278 (Contribution balance fault #6), cutout occasionally while driving, and was very hard to start. Apparently the "aftermarket" one was throwing the timing off just enuff to cause all the probs. Put in a CPS I knew was factory last weekend and everything is now fixed.

It was an aftermarket part, and it may not be what I need. But, I can't believe that the engine won't run and I change the CPS and it still won't run that I would have two that did the same thing. I have bought new "bad parts" before but there was a difference in the way they worked. If it doesn't rain today I will try to check the oil in the high pressure pump. I would like to take it to a mechanic, but the closest one is
in Amarillo and that is 90 miles.

JDS549 the way to check your HPOP is to remove the little allen plug on the top of the reservoir. The oil needs to be within one inch of the top. You may need to use a piece of wire or some other suitable instrument as a small dipstick to be able to determine the oil level in the reservoir.
If it's low, that's your stalling problem. It's draining off overnight.
