Ok, i started this topic for those of you that wanted more info on the headlight conversion that i did on my 77. i cant figure out how to put the picture on this post so if you are curious they are in my gallery.
anyway, what i did was actually very simple. i got 2 headlight assemblies from a wrecked truck @ work (2004+ freightliner century class), i removed these lights from their mounting assemblies which left me with what was very similar to a regular light just a bit bigger in the back. i then took my original headlight assemblies and removed the headlight "bowls". then i had to cut the hole that was left a little bigger so that the headlights would sit inside it, pretty much the same way the original "bowl" did. while doing this i had to leave 2 tabs, one on each side, and bend the one on the top up flat. these tabs match up perfectly with the original mounts from the halogen lights. what you do is drill holes in the tabs and bolt the light into the original headlight assembly. this requires no real modification to the truck, and you can always switch it back to original just by unbolting the assembly.
another nice feature that i dont have in the picture is the fact that the original stainless trim from reg headlights fits perfectly on the halogen, i am eventualy going to put these on mine, i just want to get a brand new set since they will have to be glued on. its a nice detail, but im not down to details on my resto yet..
deals can be made...., i come across these every once in awhile; after all, i am a diesel mechanic for one of the largest trucking companies in the buisness. these things are wrecked every day.. as for a tech article, i just might do that when i get some time. where can i get info about how to submit it? and is it really a practical tech article when you can buy a similar product in the aftermarket?
the only real difference is that this is a 2 bulb system, 1 for lowbeam, 1 for high, i used the freightliner harness @ the headlights/t.signal/marker and connected to ford factory harness (basic wiring, nothing hard), believe it or not the turn signal/marker light socket is the same plug in, meaning it will "snap" into the original ford lens. it will also upgrade the t.sig/marker to a newer style (and brighter)bulb that just plugs in.
