I have a 1986 F 350 with a 460. I am not thrilled with this engine. I was wondering what I could switch to with as little headache as possible. I was wanting to go to a 351 but would consider a diesel. It has a auto transmission also. Any thoughts? Thanks
it seems like there is always something wrong with it. Oil leak after oil leak, poor gas mileage, I just don't see the benefit of having the big block.
The easiest thing you could do is do a re-ring kit with the possiblity of upgrading it to a master overhaul. In the long run you will end up replacing a lot of small parts that will nickle and dime you to death swapping over to a 351 or diesel. For starters the 460 c6 fits, well, the 351M, 370, 400M, 429, or the 460. So your already out a transmission. Then you have to think of the mounts and so on. A re-ring kit will cost you a weekend if you have all the tools to build the engine. Or you could pay someone $2000 to do it. Either way your out even more converting it.
I switched from a worn out 352 FE to a rebuilt mildly built 460 C-6 successfully in my '66 F-100. I took two years to research everything, bought three donor trucks, and had almost everything planned out and ready, but I still had little issues pop up that cost a lot of extra money and time to overcome. Although I love the power of the engine, and I like the swap, in retrospect, it would have been a lot cheaper, a lot easier, and much less frustrating to just rebuild and improve what I had.
