I recently bought a 1966 f100 Custom Cab Long Bed. The original engine had been replaced with a 289. I replace it with a 351W. My problem occur the other day when the accelerator cable broke. I purchased an original (20 inches long) from Dennis Carpenter which did not work because it was too long. Can anyone tell me of an accelerator cable from a different model that will work.
Mike the length of the cable doesn't matter. You can make a 40" cable work. It is how you clamp the cable in the mounting bracket behind the carb that is the key.
BTW you share the same last name as my mother.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
The twist is too sharp to have free movement in the cable with the 20" cable. A longer cable will be unsitely. I'm trying to get the best look possible.
I had the same problem recently. I went to a local yard and pulled the pedal assembly and various rods from three different trucks and did away with the cable junk (11 bucks for the pedal assemble rods were free). I have had two cables break, one on a different car and this one, luckily I was close to home both times. I never had a rod break yet. You will just have to experiment with different rod lengths and how they are bent, but it is an easy fix and I doubt you will ever have to worry about this again.
If you still have the old parts,
use the old sleeve and thread some new aircraft cable (wire rope) through. It helps to carefully cut the tip down to a point and wrap it with a small bit of tape to get the cable through. Then use your old attachments/cable attachments. I used the round eyelets on one end and the cut connection off the old cable to hold it on.
Too long a cable is not necessarily good. the replacement than I paid several $$ for broke after about 2 years, part of which I attribute to tool long a cable forced into the original guides. (also made the accelerator stiff)
I went to Napa Auto Parts and picked up 2 ball joint fittings and 3 feet of 5/16 threaded round stock. I fabricated mine out of that to replace the cable (really it was a coat hanger). Cost me less then $15.00 (ball joints were $6 a piece) Now I know it wont break when I pound the gas in. Plus I can adjust my throttle linkage any way I want to now. Are you running an aftermarket carb or the stock one? Mine is a Holley.
My 63 F100 has a rod not a cable. It is factory. It works fine with my 351W/ Edelbrock performer intake and 600 Holley carb. You may also look into the pedal rod assemblies from a mid 70's Ford truck.
