any experience with hedman #89280 headers

i was thinking of getting a set for a 83 f-250 with 460 automatic, the summit site says no for engine swap and my truck was originaly diesel, are these headers that close fitting? how about the side mounted fuel tank, is it better to remove it for a more straight shooting exhaust on the driver's side? summit says they come with gaskets, bolts, and reducers are they of good quality? are 1 3/4" primaries good for midrange power? and i'm still having starting problems with the ignition timing, starts good in one position and runs and accelerates best in aother position but won't start?????

thanks ryan

I am a guy who has run many versions of headers and here is what I found: Bar none, BAR NONE...the only headers I will ever run again are Hookers! They seal the best, have the thickest flanges and just always seem to fit with no work. Even the lower Competition series are better than anything else on the market. Every set of headman headers I have seen leak at the lower pipe flanges and most warped and would not reseal at the head once removed.

As for your timing, it sounds like your mechanical advance is stuck or your vacuum advance isn't working at all.

For what its worth I put Hedman headers from Summit on an 85 F-250 4WD 460 w/ stan trans. The starter motor was a real PITA to work around, even w/ the break/flange in two of the tubes. The only way to get it to fit was undo motor mounts and raise the engine several inches, with the starter loosened. There wasn't much black paint left on the header by the time it was finally bolted on. If you've gotten the old manifolds off w/o breaking any bolts you're probably through the worst of the job. Don't know about fuel tank interference -- my truck has doubles and there was no problem. I chose to go into single exhaust w/ 3" outlet -- very quiet -- maybe even too open. Hope that helps -- garcia
