Hello,I picked up a chrome sliver from my front bumper onto my polishing towel.I was doing my driver side step rail, and the sliver scratched the backend, near the supercab door on the step bar chrome. Is there any possible way of buffing out scratches in chrome? Thank you,Al.
I would say the liklihood is about 0.05% chance of success, without actually re-chroming it.
A decorative chrome finish is two things; very thin and very hard. If you manage to scratch through the chrome, polishing it out will require polishing through the chrome, which will leave you with a yellow spot from the nickel that is under the chrome. Polishing through chrome is not an easy thing to do by hand.
I'm sure there are a bunch of people that will say it can be done with this or that but in all liklihood, what they've done or witnessed is their 'polish' is either acidic or has a very fine abrasive that has removed the thin layer of grime/rust/etc. to reveal the actual chrome, that a simple wand wash won't accomplish.
