While prowling through a relatives barn (being nosy), I saw her deceased husbands farm truck sitting there and went for a closer look (it's a BIG barn). Turns out that it's a 1962 factory four wheel drive F100. I havent seen one of these before and was wondering how to go about finding out how many were made, as well as ask if anybody knew when Ford started making light duty four wheel drives. By the way, the truck has been in the barn since '86 when he died, and yes, I'm trying like hell to get it in my possesion.

 

I'm not sure how many were made, but I believe thay started making light duty 4x4's in 58

Ford started making factory light duty trucks in 1959 and I have no idea how many were made, but they are not getting any easier to find in the 59-60 model years. As far as 60-66, they are slightly more common, but not much. Most had 44 front axle, 24 divorced t-case and
9" rear. Also most common were 292 v-8 and 4 speed floor shift.

 

iv got a 63 250 4x4 not stock all rigged and now it needs to be re-rigged (im workin' on it) but im not sure how many were made ive only and sadly seen 1

 

I just picked up a 62 4x4 f100 2 weeks ago. (and working on it every day since) Everything stock but the engine, trans, and transfer case. Never seen one like it before. Several people have asked about the factory 4x4. Still works great, got me out of hole yesterday in the Gulf of Mexico, where I was hookin some Reds, and Black Drum I thought for sure I was going to have to call for help, but 4low grabbed some dirt spat the truck right out.............Jason

 

I've got a '64 F100 4X4, 292 V8, 4spd styleside. My book says about 2500 were made. The Flare/step side is even more rare. I saw one other '63 4X4 in Redding, CA. while driving this beast up to Beaverton, OR. where I live. This truck of mine has gone many more backwood rough wilderness areas than the 1701 Enterprise...

 

Steve Have you found any more info on the 62 4x4.
I my self, have a 62 F11 and love every minute of it. I use it to pull a cheby 1/2 ton trailer converted to haul fire wood. I load a cord of wood on the trailer and fill the bed of my truck and out of the woods we come.
My truck is all original to include the original 292 and T98 tranny.

I have a 62 f100 4x4 I've ben work on for about 5 years now it was my dads truck he picked it up in 64 and had it ever since. I have never seen one like it ether i've been told 62 was the first year that ford made a factory 4x4 and mine is a step side long bed even more rare i think. love to see some picks of yours. i just did a frame off restoration on mine and are now working on the body. good luck and have fun with it.

 

I have the cab that came from a California 4x4 62 it has the door steps and the raised roof line like the 65=66 and the battery cover on the passenger side floor I'm using this cab for my 64 longbox

Factory installed 4WD introduced in: 1959 = F100/250's, 1979: = F350's.

The problem with the 1962 records is: Ford lumped 2WD & 4WD together:

1962 F100: Chassis & Cowl (1) / Chassis & Windshield (11) / Platform & Rack-Stake Bed (175) / Chassis & Cab (9,456) / Styleside (non Uni) Pickup (24,610) / Flareside Pickup (29,934) / Unit Bodied Styleside Pickup (68,983).

These records were compiled from the original FoMoCo records by R. L. Polk & Co., who has kept these records for the entire US auto industry since the 19teens.

429unibody: 1966 F100 4WD's do not have door steps, these trucks use the same cab as 1965/66 F100/250 2WD's. The 1966 F100 4WD's Styleside bed is the same as 1964/66 F100/250 2WD.

1961/65 F100/250 4WD, 1966 F250 4WD use the 1957/60 Styleside bed as do 1961/66 F350's. 1966 F100's have coil spring front suspension.
