Rad support rusted away by frame.

Has anyone ever heard of the rad support rusting away where it is bolted to the frame on a 93 or like year F150? Is this a common problem?

Yep, they all do it eventually.

And here is what I went through fixing it, since my Ford Dealer couldn't get the body bushings at the time (they were on backorder for about a month, and I got sick of waiting, so I fangled something, you shouldn't have to do this)

Radiator support stuff starts about 4-5 pictures down.

Yeah i work in a body shop and have replaced my fair share of rad supports (which is a pain in the a**. I was just wondering if it was a common problem or not, for ive never really seen it happen on vehicles that are relatively new. Thanks for the input. What I think im going to do is make a bracket and weld the frame and rad support together. The truck is not nice enough to spend time replacing the rad support.

Updating all my posts. I did end up replacing the rad support. I also spent time fixing 99 percent of the rest of the rust on the truck and painting. The truck looks beautiful. Thanks guys.

From what i have seen from junkyards and my 2 87 trucks it is a common problem. Old batteries swell and seep down, rust through the tray and eventually the battery acid makes its way down to the cab mount. Just sits there, the acid never evaporates, it just reconstitutes (?) when there is moisture build up. . .eats away a little bit till it dries, and starts over. . .

Could be wrong though

Well obviously its been over a year since I posted this thread and I have had plenty of time to get acquainted with these trucks. Not only have I since replaced my rad support, but my boss' on his 87 f150 and my friends on his 93. Its actually a pretty easy thing to replace as long as you keep track of where everything goes and you try not to break alot of bolts. I recommend this to anyone with a rusted out rad support. It greatly stabilizes the front end and eliminates alot of squeaks.
