Programmer suggestions?

Trying to decide the ups and downs of getting some kind of programmer. Mainly want the ability to switch between some form of fuel economy and preformance. I have a 1994 F-350 with a 7.5L, Crew Cab, 4x4 everything stock. Right now MPG is killing me at about 7.5 and that is mostly highway miles. Suggestions? I would like to get a Turbo, or Super charger.... which of course cost a boat load, but I think one of those would help with MPG and of course preformance.

Suggestions? I truely know nothing about the above subjects, let me know what you think. -myers

Hi GF,

Well, your vehicle is not an OBD-II vehicle, so you cannot use any of the plug-in tuners - you will need to use a traditional performance chip.

And of course, that 460 cu. in,. engine is never going to get "good" fuel economy, it's a giant that requires a large amount of fuel to run - they were built to produce a lot of torque, and back in those days, Ford accomplished power by using huge engines, rather than efficient engines - at least, in the case of these trucks,. What you have is the largest gasoline engine Ford ever made for practical purposes, so while power can be improved, and yes, you can potentially see some mpg gains, don't expect a BIG change in mpg - maybe 1-2 more mpg is about it, but that is a very nice gain in terms of a percentage!

If you'd like to give us a call at our number listed below, we can go over the details with you.

I know with a 460 that I won't be getting massive mpg gains, at least not with what I have planned at the moment. However every little bit helps, and im hoping with a chip I can gain a 1-3 mpg gain...

What kind of options do I have?

I'll probably... maybe call tomorrow. Right now im in the research phase... ie broke but will definetly look into what you can offer.

I appreciate your help! -myers

If I had an extra $30,000 laying around then I might consider it.... oh... no... i'd just put a down payment on a house, build a jeep, buy a 94 F-250 460 4x4 with plenty of upgrades and completly rebuild my Crew Cab from front to back....

Hi Fal (sorry, I should have used the abbreviation FG in my earlier post instead of GF!),

I think that is a reasonable expectation - it really all depends on what kind of shape the engine is in now, as well as it's state of maintenance - you'd be surprised at how many "older" trucks we see where some of the owners have never replaced a fuel filter, or the O2 sensors, cleaned the EGR tract, and all the other things that have to be done as an engine accumulates miles and that affect the results of a good tune on it - and this is just talking in general, of course.

You're right, every little bit helps at $3 a gallon, and the 460 V8 is actually a great towing workhorse, with a lot of torque. They do like to crack exhaust manifolds, more so in the Lincolns than in the trucks, but they are a great engine that has been used for everything from towing to drag racing and everything in between.
