What would you get (if you could for college).

-I would really love an older f250 to pull my trailers and such, but fuel prices arelittle expensive

- I guess my choices would be a ranger, tacoma, or maybe f-150. throw in whatever you think would be a good choice

- 4x4 is a must (work and huntin etc.)
-preforably extended cab
-v6 if in small truck def. 5.4 in a f-250

enough about what i want though, what would you get based on some of the stuff above?

If you can swing the newer style with the 5.4 I say go for it. Get the best thing you can afford.
I made it through 4 years of college with mine... well 3 I guess... Got it beginning of soph year. Never looked back.

You're in the same market as I am. I have seen a '91 Toyota 4x4 ext. cab V6 5-speed, lifted and with "big tires" in my area for under $3000, and I also saw a '93 Bronco (no word on specs or shape) for $3000. Both of those are on my hit list.

I've also been thinking about the Bronco II's since they can be had for a song, as well as early Explorers with 5-speeds. But I haven't had much luck finding them. I might also consider a Ranger or an S-Dime with 4x4, but they are both hard to find and, based on my experience with just a 2wd S-Dime, will probably ride way too rough.

I myself avoid anything newer with OBD-II technology in it since it's more complicated, less friendly, and records your driving data.

Now if I had money, metalworking skills, and time galore, I would tell these fuel injected things to go blow me and get a '25 T-bucket, a Hudson Twin-H Power Straight Six and have me some fun It's about time I slid behind the wheel of something carb'd again anyway.

I would reccomend a 1966 Ford F-100. Great combination of power, mileage, looks, and towing capacity.

 

If it were me I go for a Bronco II (built on ranger chasis) if you want a nice small suv, that can fit into compact spaces, and good good gas mileage, or ford ranger if you want a pickup. My old 88 Bronco II 2WD with the 2.9L V6 automatic was great for a compact suv, could turn on a dime, it also got good gas mileage 19-21 city 24-26 highway. If you get the 5 speed and 4WD, it will still get good gas mileage. (There were two or three people with 4WD, and 5 speed getting 27-30mpgs on the highway) Or if you want more power get a ranger with the 4.0L.

I just bought a 2000 F-150 ext. cab off road package with a 5.4L. I love the looks and it does decent on gas. The 97-2003 are some of the best lookin trucks on the road and they can be picked up in great condition with lower miles for not much money.

 

I'd go with an older ranger or f150 with the striaght 6. The bronco II get good mileage but they are kinda hard to find (at least here) and I have heard some not so good things about them. I love my FSB but I only get 10 mpg so that wouldn't be my choice for economy. Our '77 f150 with a 351M gets good mileage about 15-18 mpg so that may be a option. The '97-2003 f150's get good mileage but I can't stand the way they look. So if it were me i'd get a '96 or older f150 or ranger with the 300 staight six.

Dude, you do NOT need a truck. Unless your hauling alot of crap, a pickup is accually a hinderance. Less people space, and you've got a 6x4 plot of steel behind you, that accomplishes nothing 90% of the time. And bad milage... Get a car, or van

A minivan with the seats out can haul most anything you could fit in an economy truck. Yeah, they dont look so good... but you can haul 5-7 ppl in it (legaly, hehehe)

Next vehicle for me will be a minivan... ****ty, but o well... My Uncles neibor's a cop, and is selling his old van for $500 to him (96 transport, KBB@2k)
The van will be used for my cousin, her kid, and her boyfriend.........
I doubt they'll stay in town long, but who knows? Anyways, I'll buy it from my uncle when they leave...

Don't bother with S-10's. Their mileage sucks just as bad as a full sized truck. My dad's boss has an 01 S-10 with the 4 banger in it, and he got it for gas mileage. He drives about 130 miles round-trip to work and back every day. It's 90% highway @ 65mph, and he gets 18mpg in the stupid thing. It doesn't even have any power. I can tell you right now that I can get 17mpg in my 94 F-150 with the 351W. I've tested it over about 5-6 tanks, and I range from 16-18 mpg. Keep your foot out of it and you'll be very surprised.

Get a 95-97 towncar. The 22.5 cubic foot trunk is big enough, and keeps your stuff out of the weather and locked up.

 

You're telling me you cant get 5 kegs in the back of a van, with the seats folded down???

And if your underaged, the little cover a van offers could be just enough...

As much as I hate it, my cousins caravan gets about 25 unloaded, 18ish towing his boat, 3 people, and 3 days worth of fishing gear
