I have an 01 Escape with 95,000+ miles on it. The first 73,000 miles were very hard driven mountain miles that is very hard on brakes. Most brake pads last me about 35,000 miles. I replaced the rotors at 68,000 miles and the pads were still about 1/3 good. The pads were harder and it did wear out the rotors but they lasted much longer and would not fade in the worst case of abuse. They could have used a softer pad to save the rotors but braking and durability would suffer. The road tests and comparisons always talk about stopping distances and fade but they seldom mention durability. Ford was producing what as best for the results that are printed and broadcast.
