just got a 97 econoline can and the previouse owner thought it had a dead cylinder but it idles fine sounds great at idle. it chugs a bit at freeway speeds. from idle when i step on the gas i can hear a sucking sound and then the engine rpms pick up. other than that pause when i step on the gas it goes well enough. i was thinking it was a vacum leak or somethign in the intake. i would not think it would idle well if it had a burnt valve or dead cylinder. so any ideas are welcome
also anyone know what the engine is? i think it's a v6 and i found a tag that said 5.4l but if anyone knows....
ok i got a chance to look at it a little closer and it seems the sucking sound i head was muffled a lot by the intake. i took the intake piping off in front of the afm and when you first step on it you get an odd rush of air out and then sucking in. a valve maby? what would do something like that? and it if were a valve problem would it not idle right? this thing is confusing me need some experienced help.
First off, if your van has a 5.4L it's a SOHC V8; not a V6. If you could give us a little more data it might help diagnose your problem...
- How many miles?
- Is your check engine light (CEL) on?
- As for a valve being bad, are you able to check the compression on each of the cylinders?
- You might have a bad coil. Does it have Coil-on-Plug (COP) ingintion (a coil at every cylinder) or does it have 2 4-pack coils on the front of each cylinder head? I *think* Ford switched to COP on '98 but I'm not sure.
If you have the twin coil-pack setup it's easy enough to hook up a timing light to each plug wire in turn and check to make sure they are all firing consistently. If they are, it's probably and fuel/air/vacuum related problem.
yes it is a v8 i called ford a bit after i posted, i didnt know at first cause i could not find the spark plugs. this weekend i found them, there is a coil sitting on top of each one. and i probably could do a compression test i just need to make a fitting.
yes the check engine light has been on since i got it never goes out. and it has about 153,000 miles on it. it was a work van and i got it cause they didnt want to fix it and it works better than my previouse vehicle.
If the CEL is on then you need to pull the codes and see what they tell you. Autozone and places like that will let you use their code reader to read the codes free-of-charge. If you have a friend with an OBD II code reader that's even better.
ok i got the codes and it has a mis fire in the #5 cylinder im hopeing its just a bad spark plug or coil or loose wire, i really hope the plug hasnt come out cause i dont want to replace the head gasket. either way tomorrow i'll dig into it and see. oh and which way are the cylinders numbered? ford did some weird ones
was it
