Rear Main Seal; Hard to Change??

My 92 f150 2WD took awhile. I have heard that you need to be sure it is the rear main seal instead of the back of the intake manifold or valve covers. Mine had no fluid above the bell housing but was dripping motor oil out of the torque convertor inspection plate. I used a Haynes manual which was very useful to me. Get the rear of the engine, oil pan and all of the transmission clean first. Some of the upper bell housing bolts will have you cussing. I had to use about 3' of socket extensions with a u-joint about a third of the way back for one of the bolts on the passenger side. Going back together I found stabbing the transmission back to the engine to be easier by my self than with my son helping me even though he is mechanically inclined. Re-installing the transmission dip stick tube was almost impossible. If I had to do it again I would probably get some all-thread rod to help get the transmission lined back up (my driveway sloped down toward the back of the truck).
