Doing truck pulls sat. for the first time with my 7.3, what gear?

Im doing my first truck pull with my truck saturday at our county fair, and Im just trying to figure out what gear I want to pull in. I plan on using 4x4 low, and am trying to figure out whether to start out in Low or first gear. I have the 6 speed manual, being L,1,2,3,4,5. I want to be able to get some speed pulling it but dont want to have to burn the sh** out of the clutch off the line. Im just doing the pulls for fun, and want to see what shes got. Ive done them before with my old trucks, but they were all auto and not a diesel either.

The trick is to not need to shift, I'd start in (2) for the first pull, and then if they run you again (most places do) you can change it from there. With the tranfer case in low range you're not going to have much trouble taking off in 2nd or 3rd.

We are not allowed to shift at all either, has to stay in one gear.

Not unless you want to go REALLY slow and sit there and bounce off the rev limiter...
Try going into low range 4WD "L" gear some time on gravel and see how fast you can go... Its a pretty slow (and jerky) ordeal.

I come down the track at 20-25MPH (I have a Dodge Cummins though) but the point it you need to have some wheelspeed.

So I pulled and...

Well I did the truck pulls saturday morning and all I can say is that I have too much power for that junk factory clutch to hold up to it! Smoked my clutch pretty good, trying to pull in low range 3rd gear and try 2nd also not good. So finally I got pissed and went 4 wheel high 1st gear and finally got a pull out of the deal. Any how, I obviously need to do something as far as upgrading to a heavy clutch if I want to do anymore truck pulls. My clutch is not burned out or anything, its just that when I put all that power to it with the sled it just cant handle it. So now where do I go what do I do as far as upgrading?

well, if you like pulling and want to keep doing it, i would go with a double disc setup like Kevin (mech) has. he slides the clutch out to about 75 feet, and he says the clutch isnt that bad in daily driving (or so i have heard). you can go with Southbend, LUK or a "zoom" clutch, that applies more pressure to the plate with centrifugal force.

I do like the sound of the double disc set up, but Im not going to go extreme or anything this is my everyday driver, I just do like two pulls a year just for the heck of it at the county fairs. I just could not believe how easily that stock clutch slipped when I put the power to it and hammer down it was bad! And its like my clutch is junk to begin with it only has 45,000 miles on it ya know. I know for a fact that truck will pull like a bast*** if that clutch didnt slip, there is a lot of power there I can tell that. Im just trying to get some opinions on where/ what to go with. thanks!

Something seems strange here. That clutch shouldnt give away that easily unless it was slipping to begin with. What power you puttin out with that stroker. Did she slip pretty easily or towards the end off the pull. I am sending you a PM. Some info you would be interested in. BTW nice truck you have just looked at your gallery.

This is exactly what happened, From talking on here and asking a couple of the other truck pullers I determined that I was going to go with 3rd gear low range, (I have the 6 speed, L,1,2,3,4,5) So I hooked to the sled, wound her up a little and eased of the clutch and once it start moving I hammered down, and I could tell right off the line it was slipping then it started smoking so I shut her down before the 75ft mark for a re pull. I then tryed taking off in 2nd gear low range and I could tell it was going to slip again, so then I went into 1st gear high range and it started pulling and kept going, but it was still slipping it the whole time to 220ft mark. If I could have got it to not slip in that 3rd gear low range, I know it would charge toward that 300 mark. All I have is the intake, exaust, wicked wheel, and dp tuner chip (stock, 40,80,100).

Your truck has a solid flywheel from the factory. Any single disc is not designed to be slipped. If you plan on any pulls in the future go with a twin disc. Give Larry a call he is a SouthBend dealer and can get what ever you need or decide.http://www.discountpowerparts.com/ You can look at SB's web site to get some ideas. http://www.southbendclutch.com/dynamax.html

Hey Kevin, when I got my SOUTH BEND Larry and Peter both told me that those trucks have the dual mass flywheel stock clutches. I don't know cause I didn't put mine in bt, that's what they said. That's why they're clutches are considered conversion clutches. GeneralLee I would go with the con OFE from South Bend. It's a good daily driver and I haven't got it to slip yet. I just got mine broke in good though. It's advertised at 400rwp I think but, Peter at South Bend said it would hold a little over 500rwp no problem. Definately go through Larry like Kevin said. He will give you a better price than South Bend. Also I ordered mine at 2pm on a mon. and I my clutch was delivered at noon the next day.
