Tires for 2002 Ranger

Realized over the weekend I am down to 4/32" on the original Firestone Wilderness HT tires on my 2002 Ranger (2.3L, 5 speed, 2WD). Surprised, as I only have 36,000 miles on the truck and I drive mostly city miles. Oh well, guess I still need to be prepared for winter as I live in Michigan. Problem is, just replaced all four tires/wheels on my son's Explorer and all four tires on my wife's Mountaineer. Any suggestions on a good all-season radial for this truck that won't damage my bank account too much?

Thanks!

If your spare is the same as the rest of your tires and, better yet, if it's not been used you could buy three tires to match and put the best old tire on for the spare. That would save you a little money and you would have the original type tires. If you find the tires locally try looking on the net like tirerack.com or something.

Continnental;Bridgestone; or Cooper make a decent inexpensive tire.

Hadn't considered using the spare...it is four years old, after all. It's not a Wilderness AT, but had heard bad news about the HT's as well. Mine haven't given me any trouble, but I rarely do any freeway driving. Probably only 5,000 or so of the 36,000 on the truck. Will also check into the other brands mentioned. Thanks!

Sounds like we got the same vehicle. Just ordered BFG Long Trail T/A (P225/70R15) from BJ's @ about $91 each including the mounting, balancing, etc package for mine.

BFGs are good tires, as are Bridgestone (I'm biased towards Bridgestone) and Coopers are also great tires. There's a good market for good tires that won't hurt your pocketbook. Check out www.tirerack.com and look at the ratings on there. I'm not saying buy from them, bc that doesn't include mount and balance. Find the tire you want based on the general price and the ratings that have been given by individual buyers of tires. Another thing to remember about those reviews that people have left, they are usually to one extreme or another. If they find the tires to be exceptionally good tires, they're more likely to respond than if the tires were mediocre. The same goes if they found the tires to be exceptionally big pieces of *%^.

I have since seen reviews that say the Dayton Timberline H/T is an economical choice, depending on where purchased, $65 to $70.

Anyone have experience with these?

What do you think about the Roughrider A/T 245/75R16 from Canadian Tire? We use to have them on a 4Runner 4X4, family truck, and they were good for 4 seasons for 4 years.
I am not sure if they will do a good job on my B-4000, 2002, 4x4. I am planning to keep them for this winter and the winter after to use winter tires.

check out the futuras at pep boys they are nice I paid 75 each for 33x12.50 there so smaller ones should be cheaper and they have deep tread on them .In fact my wifes tires on her sport trac are factory and have less than mine and mine are over a year old and hers are brand new

My suggestion will be hard on the wallet, but my experience is the Michelin LTX M/S are the best stock type tire I've had. Will last 2-3 times the 36k you have on your current tires, and will stay balanced too.

Daytons are actually made by Firestone, so are Lemans. I might recommend the LeMans AT... not too expensive, and although not the BEST tire in the world, they look halfway decent and perform fairly well.

I'm gonna second the Michelin LTX M/S. I just got 4 last week. Yeah, they're a little on the expensive side, but you definitely get what you pay for. I noticed a difference right away. They seem to stick better than the Wranglers I had before. And way better in the rain.

I purchased 4 Definity AT P235-70R16 from Pepboys. They ride smooth and have an aggressive mud and snow thread. Theses tires are made by Cooper for Pep Boys.
