Alternate DPFE sensor for 2001 4.6L ???
I have a 2001 F150 with a 4.6L Triton engine. Last week my CHECK ENGINE SOON light came on, downloaded with the OBDII and got a P1401. Through other notes in this forum I strongly suspected that I needed to replace the DPFE sensor. That is where things got a little confusing. My Haynes book told me right where the sensor should be but in its place was an empty flange with 2 unused studs. I went to the local Autozone and looked at the replacement. It looks just like the part shown in Haynes and would fit right into the vacant spot. I did a little looking and found what I think to be a replacement sensor. It has a 3 lead connector on the front and 2 air lines feeding in to the bottom. Certainly looks like a DPFE sensor but not like the one shown in the manual. Seems like I could put in the Autozone replacement part OK if I could get a couple of correct hoses to reach the new location. The sensor that is in the car is aprox 2"X2". The one in the store (and in the manual) is about 3"X4". Anyone have any information on this other part? Why is it different? Would the standard replacement work as well (and hopefully better)?

There are two different configurations of the DPFE sensor.
The older syle is a rectangular shapped box that is mounted near the EGR sample tubes and connect with rubber hi-temp hoses.
The new style plugs directly onto the EGR tubes and has an electrical connector. No mechanical mount is provided other than the fit onto the tubes.
See TSB 04-11-1 for a diagram and the then current Ford part numbers for the DPFE sensor. Use the Ford one, it's been improved from the original...
