Question 94 Ranger wont start/clunk from engine compartment?

I have a 94 Ranger 2wd 2.3 manual tranny. It has sit for most of the last 3 months, 2 of which it started and ran fine. Now every time i turn the key i just get a clunk from under the hood. I have tried boosting the battery with no luck. the only thing i had noticed with it previously was that every once in a while it wouldnt start on the first try-it would just act completely dead until i let off on the clutch and then stuck it back in-then it would start up wihtout a hitch-i talked to a guy at the dealership this morning and he said it sounds like the motor could be locked up ?!?! is this what it sounds like? Also the headlights, radio etc. run ok so the battery isnt completely dead-the only other thing i can think of is that maybe the jumper cables were shot- but would a semi dead battery cause me to hear a clunk instead of the starter relay clicking? HELP!!!

Either the starter relay is going out, or your clutch position switch is going out. That's the only way I know of that it could possibly relate to the clutch not being depressed.

UNLESS of course, your clutch is actually not disengaging when you press the pedal. Lay underneath the truck, pull the little rubber inspection cover from the bellhousing (driver's side) of the tranny, and have someone step on the clutch. Make sure it's disengaging.

There's also a clutch pedal position switch underneath the dash on the the upper part of the clutch pedal support. Make sure there is 12V at the switch when the pedal is pushed in.

The engine is not locked up. Don't let the dealer even go near that kind of BS.
