Timing

Could someone explain to me the timing thing on the V-10. Something about 73 degrees and the firing order?

Because there are 720 degrees (2 complete revolutions) in the 4-stroke engine cycle, divide that by 10 cylinders, you get 72 degrees.

A V8 firings one cylinder every 90 degrees.

The 72 degrees gives the V10 (and Indy cars) a distinctive note.

Does that mean anything else besides tone? Does it help with response, power, etc.?

The more even intake pulses result in a much flatter torque curve.

Fact: The 5.4L V8 now has VVT (variable valve timing) and 3 valves to get the flattest torque curve possible (80% of peak torque at 1000RPM).

The V10, even 2000-2004 2-valvers, put out 80% of their peak torque at 1000RPM without VVT, 3 valves, or anything else.

(The three-valve V10 is even more of a torque monster, but STILL does NOT use VVT! There's a reason that it doesn't need it - the smooth intake vacuum).

To me, those facts point towards the intake vacuum being smoother, resulting in better low-end torque.

Cool! Thanks! I have no muffler, just the cat and pipe, done by the oriignal owner. I didn't understand the references to "ricer"

Mostly, when I hit it off the line, I lke the tone, but yesterday I punched it once, then REALLY punched it and I heard the high pitched tones people speak of. Kinda yukky sounding, but I have all kinds of power with just the first punch, probably because of the 4.3. All that to say, I can stay away from the high pitched tone and blow most people's doors off, off the line. If I really need it, it is always there.

On a side note, I have had two puny little cars cut me off, I dealt with them severely. They will not mess with any more F350 SD Dually's methinks.

It was nothing illegal or hurtful, other than pride.
