6.4L Powerstroke Rumor

I heard this rumor, and I am trying to find out if there is any truth to it: We all know that the 6.0L Powerstroke in addition the issues that it has had in the past, is not a lot of fun to work on. It seems that many Ford Diesel Technicians have not been happy about the 6.0L's ease of service and repair either. It would also appear that the 6.4L Twin Turbo may even be more difficult to service than the 6.0L was. Another problem is that Ford has been allowing less and less labor time to be charged for warranty repairs, and it is becoming difficult for dealership technicians to make any money doing warranty work. So, the rumor is that many Ford Diesel Technicians are not taking the training to become certified in the new 6.4L Powerstroke.

I haven't heard that rumor at all. I have read where techs talking about their classes though. Maybe they will comment.

Hopefully Ford is ahead of the curve this time.

In order for me to keep my diesel certification, I have no choice but to take any training that Ford makes mandatory in any given specialty. Next, I don't find the 6.0 particularily difficult to work on, and from what I have heard (have not yet read), but 6.4 labor operations for most major repairs (such as engine removal and cylinder heads) will involve cab removal, so will likely pay more. One of the good things at my dealer is that if anyone were to not break even on a 6.0 warranty job, they get topped off the hours that they lost, as to keep us from rushing and have a quality repair.

How many diesel powered vans have you worked that needed turbo repair or oil leaks around the turbo?

I don't really want to toot my own horn... but...I can change an Econoline turbo in 45 minutes... high pressure pump in just over 2 hours... remove the engine in under 5 hours (although putting it back in is a different story)... I've even found a way to get the right rocker cover out without removing the motor mount or butchering anything... TOOT!

Hey CanadaGuy, you have these steps down on paper for e-mail to help a fellow tech out?

Hehe... I don't have it on paper, but I don't keep secrets... then again I'm always worried about the good SLTS folks ruining my paycheque.
