I going to change the fluid in the transfer case for the first in time in my 99 5.4l expy .I know i need 2 quarts of mercon and a pump . Also to take the fill plug off first. What Tools and sizes do i need to take the fll an drain plug out also is the transfer case easy to spot when i am looking for it.. Thanks any help would be great..
The transfer case is locaded under the driver seat and is attached to the transmission...you'll know it when you see it. A fluid change is very simple.
My 99 XLT takes a 3/8th's drive ratchet - no socket, just the square ratchet end. There should be two plugs - the lower one drains and you fill into the upper one. Make sure you can get the fill plug off before you remove the drain. If you can't fill, you don't want to have drained anything. I think you're aware of that, I'll restate for those less informed. I've used a squeeze bottle with a short piece of hose attached to fill into the upper plug. For two quarts+ I can't see buying a pump unless you have something laying around. If you're somewhat creative you'll figure out a cheap way of overcoming gravity. You'll see once you locate the transfer case.
at what mileage should the fluid be changed. I have a 99 that has 114,000 on it and was wondering what the manufacturer recommends....My vehicle does not have the owners manual since I bought this vehicle used.

I have a hand pump that screws on to the top of the tranny fliud bottle - the pick-up tube is just the right length to hit the bottom of the bottle. I got it for about 5 bucks at a marine store to change the outdrive oil in my boat. Makes the tranny fluid job a nearly dripless operation.
