1971 F250 4X4 Power Steering Conversion

I would like to install power steering in my 1971 F250 4X4. I purchased it new and it has served me very well. My arms are getting tired of turning the wheel and I would like to get a little assistance. Can anyone help me?

Thanks,

Jeri Ginnaty

Any 78 to 79 4x4 F-250 or F-150 integral power steering gear boxs will work. But you will have to box in your frame by welding in a plate. Please do not take that route though. Your year of Ford is a Classic and the frames are getting rare. A more expensive, but more respectful way of adding power steering is to get a ram and cylinder off of a 73 to 77.5 F-250 HighBoy and bolt it right in place. Buying new fluid lines will get expensive but it will be a bolt on that can be takin off and made "original" again.

1971 F250 4X4 Power Steering Conversion

Jeri, read my reply at Dave Green 76 150. My experence is with 2X4's but having followed the discussion for a while, I have read that there are some year models power steering, that are less diserable than others. Robert has offered a year model to use.

The thing that I suggest strongest find a "donor", there should be a 71 250 4X4 in a local salvage yard, that you can use. I put a 76 power conversion in my 66. I can tell you what you might get for the conversion. I changed the truck from manual to auto, and got the disk brakes when I made the change as well. Your ventage 4X4 will be harder to find parts for, but since your butt is not in a sling, spend some time looking for your donor. About 10 days ago I tried to incourage Charles to spend some time looking for the F350 conversion that he wanted, he replied personally to me, thanking me for the advise, but he was in a hurry. He sent me an email and then posted that he had spent, $650.00 for parts and a hot weekend changing the axles out only to read in the sunday paper about a donor truck about 100 miles away that he could have gotten the whole thing including a running engine for $450.00.

Find your donor and harvest the parts that you need, and if you are on the east coast wait until this heat wave is over to do your conversion. If you go the donor route instead of after market, you can get replacement parts a lot easier when you need them.

Good luck,

John

Power steering conversion

Ihave a 72 f250highboy with manual steering that to me is just a part monster..I'm not a fabrication person and don't have a good shop and tools.do I have to spend 5000.00 to get power steering. And this truck to me is just not worth keeping original. So it's a 72 f250highboy I have seen other f250highboy s for very little value.any cheap information and cheap parts.would be appreciated. Thank you

I have done the power steering conversion. It is not to bad. If you search this forum and the pirate forum there are a lot of examples.

I used the 1979/78 4x4 gear. It is good box if you want to keep the push pull and this will be the only modification you do.

i just let the power steering setup go when I sold the FE motor...

Good luck with whatever you do.

I cut up my 4x4 but it has not been a gem for many years but if someone wanted to spend some money they could figure out what box will fit between the the cross member and the radiator support then have a machined bracket that would bolt to the frame and the new power steering gear.

It would hold up as well as the original setup since it would still be push pull steering.

Rich

I bought that kit minus the drag link and pitman arm for my 68 F250. The reason I didn't get the full kit is I installed a 2" drop arm from Parts Mike rotated 90 deg and did a high steer conversion for my front axle. It will not hit the engine cross member at full right lock and still allow the front spring to compress without hitting the tie rod at left lock. Springs are 4" Skyjacker. The original D44 6CFHD is in the barn and a HP D60 axle is under the truck now with a 10.25 Sterling in the rear. Is the kit pricey, a little, but if you want a mostly bolt in set up and you dont have a core for the auto parts store this is the way to go.

Use the 78 box

Here is a link to the complete switch over to the 78 fully integrated system, did this about eight years ago, never had any problems, pictures included
