I am going to "restore" my 68' steering wheel. Has anyone ever went through this? POR-15 has a kit for $70.00 OUCH!! What is a good product to fill the cracks with? What about paint? I have some plasti-kote ultra vinyl paint?
Rob from what I have seen from burned vehicles, Steereng wheels are molded around a metal core.
You should be able to fill in the cracks sand and paint your wheel with no problems. Be aware that high heat is what caused the cracks in the first place and use materals that can handle the 160º or higher heat stress.

In the still cool hours of the night, you can hear chevys rusting away.
I've used the por15 stuff. The kit comes with degreaser, gloves, wipes, epoxy putty, sandpaper, sanding blocks, Scoth-Brite pads, epoxy primer, an aerosol sprayer, and polishing compound for use after the final coat of paint. Plus they include some tools: a small hacksaw, a file, a 1/8-inch drill bit, and even a pin to puncture the end of the tube of paint hardner. Buy yourself some extra sandpaper, glove, and primer, and you'll be able to fix at least two wheels. http://www.por15.com
