89 F150 Tranny problem
Thinking about picking up the 1989 F150 for cheap but it has a problem. Its a stick and the Reverse gear wont work. Guy says that somethings wrong with the gear box but it pops out of reverse when trying to use it. I know all about mustang trannys but not the trannys in this truck. Wondering if I would be able get get one at a junkyard for cheap or if a rebuild would be worth it. Hes selling for 500 and has only 64000 miles on it. How much would fixing it cost me. All other gears work fine and I didnt know if you can just get the reverse gear rebuilt or if the whole thing had to be rebuilt. Thanks guys

The transmission in your truck is the M5R2, a Mazda built unit. You can try to repair the unit, or you could get a good used transmission from a salvage yard. At 200-400, versus 750-900 for a rebuilt unit, they're not a bad deal. Or just get a reman unit and enjoy a warranty.

What are the chances of me finding one from a salvage yard and how much would a remanufatured unit cost?

You just have to call around. I'm looking at getting one in upstate SC for $200, but some places may ask as high as $400. Anything more for a used unit isn't worth it. I see the remans on E-bay from 750-900 delivered, but it might be hard to justify a trans that cost more than the truck!
