This is more of a question and may not be very cheap, but if a dealership had the part in stock you might at least be able to try fit something, but that's a very big if. I would agree though that a good dealership mechanic would at least have access to the info you need and could point you in the right direction very quickly. Just a thought.
geezergeek, how much would you have to have for your shroud?
If the post above with the new cost of 125$ is correct, I'd be willing to part with this one for 45$+u-pay-shipping. Where are u located? If I remember correctly this shroud is in pretty good condition, no cracks and none of the mount points broken. This is not my original shroud for my rig, it is one of several parts I bought in a group off of ebay from a guy in florida who (apparently) restores this vintage of pickups. My original shroud was unfortunatly lost with many of my truck parts that were either new or refurbished in a shop fire about 2yrs ago. I have slowly been reaccumulating the lost parts as well as finishing the rebuild of the 400 that I initiallty set out to do. Luckily, a lot of the parts survived ok because they happened to be stored in the truck instead of the shop. Should u decide to buy it as a sanity check it would be a good idea to send me the dimensions of your mounting since I have not personnally used it, although the other stuff I got was fine, usually better than expected. Thanks for the quick reply, I can send you a pic also if that will be of value. Let me know, I'd like to find it a good home. regards, Joe.
the measurements of the radiator core is 26 3/4" by 19 1/2" the mounting holes are 27 3/4" center to center which would put the total width of the shroud roughly 28 1/4". the dpth from the core fins to the center of the fan blades is 3 1/2". The fan is higher than the top of the core by about an inch or so figureing the total hieght of what the shroud should be is iffy, but my estimate is 22" at least to allow for clearance of the fan, which has a diamiter of 19".
I appologise for the negotiations, thanks for pointing that out to me.
after lookin in the Dennis Carpenter catalogue this still doesn't make sense. In the picture of the D4TA-CA or CB it would have to be upsidedown from the picture and no depth measurements are given and the hieght seems to be too tall. The D7TA-SA looks right side up in the picture but still no depth measurement and seems too tall. The D7TA-AA looks more like the hieght but again the picture would have to be upsidedown and no depth measurement is given.
I looked at a 75 to 78, not sure on the exact year, had round head lights and a single gas cap on rear driver side box, 2x4 with a 390, this shroud looked like it would work in my truck. This was a truck sitting along the road for sale so I stoped and popped the hood just to look. Was unable to find any casting numbers. I also looked at a 79 4x4 with AC and I think a 400, its shroud was way too deep. I would appreciate a picture. You could email it to me at n1collins@hotmail.com. I guess its ok to give my email address? I did notice that my radiator is not mounted in the right holes, it sits about 2 to 3 inches higher than it should. Not sure what happened there or even if the radiator that is in my truck is stock. I baught it aftermarket and must have mounted it in the wrong holes. I wish I would have known about this site when I was building it, would have saved me a lot of head scratching. At any rate, if I mount it in the right holes I think the 25" in hieght would make more sense on the D7TA-SA at Dennis Carpenters, as long as the depth is 3 1/2", but not sure about that since they don't give the depth in thier measurements. Wow! who knew a shroud could be such a hassel, and with gas prices the way they are, I would go broke driving around to all the junkyards in the truck just to try to test fit one, and thats if they have any for the older modle trucks. Mostly what I am finding around here, northwestern Oklahoma, at the junkyards are that they don't have anything pre 1980ish. By the way I rebuilt this truck 4 years ago, and only about 25 to 30k on the new engine, when I was living in Wyoming, and the temps there never got high enough to make this an issue, never heated up unless I was in a really hard pull and on the hottest day of year that i ever drove it on was 85 dgrees, and even then I could just back out of it a little and the temp would come down. Hewre at 95 dgrees the temp won't come down untill I am coming down the other side of a hill, if even then, so I just don't pull with it when it is really hot, but would be nice to be able to.
I had trouble finding one for my 79 F-250. The only place I found one was LMC. I even went to a local Ford dealership and the guy told me they were obsolete and he couldn't get them for me.
I just went and measured my 78" F350, 351M-400 shroud w/o air.
25-1/2 " W X 15" H ( C/line of mounting bolts) X 5" deep. This is OEM dimensions. I do have an extra shroud that has a repairable crack on top, if interested, E-mail me.
I can tell you that were two different size rads. for these trucks though.
I had bought a 76" or 77" F-250 about 12 yrs ago and saved the "new" rad. & shroud out of it (of which I still have) and it's approx. 2-1/2 - 3" wider and thicker too.
However, the C/line dimensions above are within 1/4" or less. Hope this helps.
I also think the depth of the shroud could be compensated for by the spacer thickness between the fan & pump, if needed. Just be sure the shroud fits the mounting holes for the rad. in your truck and that the relief for the bottom hose is on the correct side if it matters.
Good Luck, HoBo
The 400 shroud will not work on a 460 3 or 4 core rad appliation.
There are 3 different rads available
2 core standard cooling
3 core extra cooling
4 core super cooling
They get wider the more cores there have.
Plus they are constructed a different size.
The mounting holes are different.
N1, I picked up the one "you need" a few years ago (to sell) because I knew how rare they are, only to one day stumble in the garage where I ended up stepping on it and breaking it into 3 pieces.
thanks Dennis, and everybody for the input. I am starting to think that the make one sugestion is the best option, but I would rather not. I would appreciate a picture and if it would help I can get some pictures of my trucks radiator at some different angles, if this will help Dennis.
Do you have a 3 row 460 radiator or a 3 row 400 radiator. They are different. I have the 351M/400 3 row in my 77 that I transplanted a 460 in. Here's a partial shot of it. https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...d=7889&width=2
