1996 Ranger 2wd 5 speed manual transmission, 4 cyl. I am having trouble removing the speedometer cable, is it somehow bolted on inside the bellhousing or can I grab it with a pair of channel locks where the metal end goes into the transmission and pry it out?Ritch11

 

Good question...

95-later Rangers do NOT have speedometer cables. Or so I am led to believe...

 

This is similar to my own '96 Ranger. I also have a 2.3, manual transmission. The odometer has gotten erratic. The spedometer works fine, but the odometer works sometimes and sometimes it stops running.

The speedo and odo both act like they would be driven from a cable. I have not been able to get behind the dash to see.

Does anyone have any experience with these they could share???

It uses an electronic pickup that is common to the Vehicle Speed Sensor common to the EEC. There is no actual speedometer cable.
