During a std tranny rebuild due you need to replace both the friction clutch plates and the steel clutch plates? How many friction and steel clutch plates are needed for 77 C4 AT rebuild?
Can't say how many clutch plates there are in a C4 but you only need to replace the steel plates if they are heat checked (same as resurfacing a flywheel when replacing the clutch) or if they are damaged from the burnt clutchs being worn down to the steel.
You should always replace the clutch plates when rebuilding an automatic unless the original plates look like new.
I found a reference that says there are 5/5 friction/steels in the front clutch pack and 4/4 friction/steels in the reverse clutch pack. I will just go ahead and get them all just to be complete. Thanks for the input.

The rear pack will have 1 more friction than steels.
