On my Fleetwood Gearbox, I have four chrome rims that have metal value stems and they have a nut on them that is starting to rust and looking bad. My question is can i simply unscrew it and put on a new Stainless nut, or do they need to be taken off and broken down to change. Thanks for any help.
You might get lucky and it stays, but you also may not, it all depends on whether it comes loose while you have the nut off. If you are careful, you might justr beable to pull it off...
I would think the air pressure inside the tire would keep the valve stem from falling into the rim/tire. Try one, worst that should happen if it does fall in, is you lose your air and have to break it down anyhow.
> My question is can i simply unscrew it and put on a new Stainless nut
Yes, as long as it is from another valve stem from the same OEM so the threads are the same.
First, deflate the tire!
Second, the value stem is held in by a rubber grommet that fills the value stem hole, so it should not back out or even turn.
Third, buy a valve stem removal tool that looks like a T, $2. Start the new nut, then put on the removal tool. Then you can pull the valve stem towards you while tightening the nut down so the valve stem does not turn in the hole.
