I've got an oil leak that seams to be coming from the back of the oil pan (near tranny) on my '88' 4.9 6cyl.. I thought maybe it was the oil pan gasket, everyone I talk to has said it's probably the crank seal. I don't know if this is something I want to mess with or not. I'm not ignorant but this sounds like it could be a tough job and everyone says it's easy to screw up. I have the tranny out right now, don't think that will help me though. Any input would help. What would be a good manual for this job (might make the decision to do it myself easier). I've had three freinds tell me three different ways to do it! ...... HELP
i changed my rear crank seal and it was pretty simple. i have a 91 and i'm not sure if it is the same seal design. mine was a 1 piece seal. i just took an oring pick and pulled it out and took some crisco (baking grease) and lubed the seal up and put it back in with a dead blow hammer and had no leaks
All right well which is it? I already have the tranny out. I don't really have the stuff required to lift the engine but, might be able to get it. Probably a little over my head at that time. It is a 4x4. Think that might make a difference.
The oil pan does not need to be removed to change the rear seal. If the transmission is out the engine wouldn't need to be lifted to get the pan out anyway. Just use an o ring pick and pull the seal out. put some crisco on the new seal and tap it in with a deadblow.
