Bigger tires, yeah right, even the little ones rub!

On My '67 F-100, I had 15X5.5 inch rims with very small P215-75R15 tires on it, worked fine but look like "Mini-cooper" wheels. I went to the more comon 15X6 with P235-75R15 tires and it looked like a truck, but they rubbed. The back wheels rubbed the inside of the wheel wells, and the front rubbed the brake hoses, and I was worried it would wear a hole through them. The backspacing is only 1/8" different from the rims. I had hoped to fit some 15X8 rims, with Nascar size tires on this "sport-Truck" But can't see it happening. I have never had any clearance problems with My '66 Chevy Truck. I can "tubb" the bed of my '67, but what can I do about the front. I guess you other guys with 67-72's have had the same problems?

Why Did Ford Make the wheel-wells so tight!

If you go with aftermarket 8" rims, they probably will be ok, but check first. Usually they stick the rim out further than stock.

You need to give more info. such as where or what you got your wheels from.Sounds like a backspacing problem to me.I've never run a wheel less than 8 inches wide on my 67 thru 79 Ford trucks and I've never had a rub from anything.I'm currently running 15x8 and 15x10 chrome wheels on my 76 and am not close to anything rubbing. Is your truck lowered?

I borrowed the 235's with the rims from my '84 F-150. I remember messuring 3-3/4" backspacing on the '84, and 3-5/8" on the stock '67 rims. To get the tires further away from the wheelwells, I think I would need less backspacing, but the least I can find in aftermarket wheels is about 3-1/2". The rubber that was worn from the tires was about 1/8", so I can't see putting on bigger rims/tires without rubbing. My truck is not lowered, but these "mini-cooper" tires sure make it look that way, if I could just get them a little widder I'd be set.

Thanks for the replies, Matt

Something doesn't sound right.

I have 15X8 with 4 inch backspacing and 30 X 9.50 tires on my 74 F100.

No rubbing. Either your truck has extremely shot springs, bent arms or something has been lowered.

215 metric tires would drown in the wheel wells of these pick-ups

Check the measurement on the rearend. It should be 61 1/4" from hub to hub - or axle housing end to axle housing end 57"

Sounds to me like someone swapped in a complete 9" rearend from a car with a narrower setup.

If they did that, I'd check A arms and spindles to see if you have a stock front as well.

You shouldn't be rubbing with tires that size.

Thanks for all the info guys,
I just got this truck about 4 months ago, so theres about 34 years of jacking around that I don't know about, and I'm not sure how many owners have been before me? I guess I'll have to get the old tape messure out, and check everything thoughly. There were some coil springs welded on to the axle tube, along with the stock ones, so there's no telling what else could of been changed.

Thanks, mabey some day I'll get 8" rims under here?

You're right. You definitely need to take some precautions and check the truck out very good for shabby fix its.Remember, make it safe before you try and make it fast and better loking.Once you get the basics figured out and fixed you'll find these trucks are great and can be alot of fun.
