Are all ford v8 mechanical fuel pumps specific to the engine series? For example fe fuel pumps wil only work on fe's.
Instead of starting another topic I will jsut ask my next question.
What is the deal with harmonic balancers, are stock balancers okay to use if the engine isn't modified that much? And when is it good to replace one? I noticed mthe rubber on mine is cracking.
There are differences in fuel pumps for different series engines. The most obvious differences are the bolt patterns (vertical and horizontal). Another difference is that an FE fuel pump (at least the one I am familiar with) has a seperator that screws onto it.
Anyway, I really doubt that any of them will interchange between engine series.
Actually the bolt pattern for Ford V8's are the same, except for the Cleveland/335 series. However the big difference is in the actuator arm(rides on the fuel pump eccentric) they are different for each engine family.
A stock harmonic balancer is fine on any mildly built engine, but if the rubber is cracked and falling out, it is time to replace it with a new one!
If you can make it crumble apart by poking it with your fingers, I would replace it. It is normal to have surface checking of the rubber, but not deep cracks.
ok thanks for the replies. The rubber seems to be pretty solid. I have a 302 holley mechanical pump and was curious if I could use it on the 390 since I need a pump for it, but now you have answered my question.
