1972 F750 391 swap
Hi guys,
First post here. I have a 1972 F750 with a 391 that has a tag on the valve cover showing it was installed after 1976. Tag is from Engine Distributors Inc. The goal here is to get it running, and then swap in a 460 for more torque to pull the 40 ft. gooseneck. What motor mounts and clutch will I need to mate up to the Clark 285V 5 speed. Any help will be appreciated

2X Bill. But I'll give you my opinion. The 391 was designed to haul, pull, etc. more weight. Like what you want to do. With the gasoline back then. Lower compression to squash spark knock, the back of the crankshaft for a bigger pilot bearing, etc. The 460 was designed for big cars then pickups and Econolines. IMHO, rebuild the 391 with a few upgrades like massaging the heads. 69 more cubes isn't worth the hassle and adapting to me. 460s are great. I have one in my 1968 F250 Camper Special. But my truck doesn't weigh as much as yours. Nor will it ever tow something that heavy.

Yes, very old post, but subject matter is important. These are 3 very different engine families, 391, 429, 534. Mixing engine families with different transmissions is a recipe for a major headache! IMO, if you want to upgrade, purchase a complete engine and transmission assembly fan to driveshaft and everything in between from a known well running donor. Buy truck engines for trucks, car engine for cars. I consider truck engines, engines that were installed in straight axle trucks. Most straight axle trucks use the front engine mount and rear bellhousing mount system that will simplify the swap. A later model engine and transmission is usually always easier to find maintenance parts for.
