considering putting a chip in the f250

Im new to this forum and read the FAQ on chips and saw that it said the a gain in MPG isnt going to happen when chipping the truck. Well heres the scenario, I have a 2004 F250 superduty, crew cab, 6 ft bed with a leer cap, everything is stock on the truck, and it has the towing package. this is the family truck for vacations, for towing the camper, and the motorcycles ect. I had heard that a dodge buddy had chipped his truck and got better torque and mileage when towing. I was wondering if anyone could send me in the right direction for chipping the 250 when we tow a 26ft camper and a 12 ft motorcycle trailer? Power isnt really a problem with this truck and the towing that we do, but is there anything to boost this gas mileage in this truck? For better gas mileage is a performance chip really what Im looking for?
Thanks

Welcome to the Forum! You have found one of the greatest resources on the net for your Ford trucks. There are alot of very knowledgable and helpful people on this site.

The first thing you should do is go into the "Use CP" and put in some information about your truck. This will help users help you.

If you have a gas superduty I would say a chip will not give you the increase in fuel milage and power that you would see in a diesel. If you have a diesel truck and you can drive it without roasting the tires off it, then yes you can get as much as 2 - 3 mpg increase. The 7.3L's do very well with chip, exhaust, and intake system. For the 6.0L I would suggest the same, but many will argue that the intake is not a must have. I personally use an Airaid intake system on my 05 6.0L and have noticed quiker spool up of the turbo, but Im more into the performance aspect of things. Adding a nice tow module like the one we get from Quadzilla adds about 65hp and will increase your fuel milage if you can drive it calm, plus it is very affordable.

Without spending big money you should check tire pressure, change oil and air filters regularly, and only drive down hill. lol If you have any questions please feel free to call us or any of the other site sponcers. thx Patrick

I'd be willing to spend close to a thousand to possibly do this, because of the amount of family vacations we do. and this "use CP" where is this?

User Cp is in one of the headers above. In there you can give us some details about your truck without re-writing it every time you have a question. Its called your signature. Its not a must have...It will just save you time. What engine do you have?

5.4L gas, Is there anything that can be done to these trucks to get a little better mileage, I know the thing is a tank so theres not much, I had a buddy that had a chevy z-71 with 35's and put the tornado thing in and noticed gas mileage difference but I've heard good and bad with these, whats you opinion of them?

I can get them from one of our suppliers, but I have yet to hear from anyone as to how they perform.

I would say get a SCT Xcal2 Strategy Flash, they show a 22 hp increase for your truck. There are lots of options as far as Intake kits go. A throttle body spacer would do more for you than a Tornado, and ofcourse a better flowing exhaust would give you better performance as well. If you got all 4 you would notice more hp, and with that you would see better fuel economy if you drove it like you do know. I dont think you should go that far for starters. I would get the SCT Tuner and try a replacement air filter that flows better. For less than half the money your talking this would be a good start. There are other tuners out for your truck, but the SCT has been so good for us and our customers its the first one I recomend for the Ford trucks. If you want to talk about the many options you have feel free to give us a call or one of the many suppoting vendors on this site. Others may have differant opinions of products, but none of them will steer you wrong.

the SCT tuner is what you suggest? and more flowing air filter upgrade to a KN air filter or should I go as far to get the intake kit?

Also when tuning, what am I really trying to tune? shift points? fuel mixture and to what?

Im really new to the tuning aspect or performance, thank you for your patience

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
This gives you an idea of the options you have. Not all of these features work on every vehicle as you can see. I would start with one of the tunes that come in the programmer before you start customizing it.

You could get an Intake system, there are many to choose from. I'm sure it would be better than just a drop in filter.

discountpowerprt-i have an 02 f-350 7.3 diesel and wondering what a SF Strategy Flash Device, like shown above, would cost for my truck. also those horsepower gains i would assume is with modifications to the intake and exhaust?
