Fire from manifolds.

I started my new engine for the first time today (with no exhaust) and there was a flame from the manifolds. Is this normal or could it be too much fuel? Or out of time?

I ran a 302 on a stand like that once and it was flaming a little bit on the throttle. It wasnt timed perfect, but it was pretty close.

Is this caused by too much fuel? It wasn't a small flame im told it was a big flame. ( I was in the cab)

Would this be caused by too much fuel? There no fuel in my lines just what i put in the carb. I'm told it wasn't a small flame ( I was in the cab) my grandfather thought the truck was going to catch fire. (sorry for posting twice computer is screwy)

if you just poured some fuel down the carb, the flame was probably bigger than it usually would be. exhaust manifolds and headers are known to have a little fire in them from time to time.

Thanks i wasn't sure on that. What about backfiring? or is that just what it sounds like straight off the manifold?
